Macaroni and cheese is a traditional “comfort food” with many delicious variations, and a clear culinary history. As a result of his travels to Europe, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson asked the U.S. ambassador to France to purchase a macaroni/pasta-making machine in 1793. And a reference to “macaroni and cheese” appeared in a cookbook in 1824.
Traditional mac’ and cheese recipes often employ cheddar cheese, influenced by British traditions. But Italians used parmesan cheese to create baked pasta dishes, and we find other popular recipes that call for gruyere or emmentaler cheeses. Or, how about a smoked gouda? Fromagination has a wide variety of cheeses that make a great macaroni and cheese dish!
In March, we’ll celebrate “Mac’ & Cheese Month” by offering four different versions (one each week) of this time-honored dish three ways:
- Lunch Weds., Thurs., and Fri. at our communal table (see below)
- “Take-and Bake” Pan for serving at home (see below)
- Ingredients – Wisconsin cheeses, pasta, and more – for homemade mac’ & cheese
Call us at 608-255-2430 to schedule a mac’ & cheese lunch, or 608-665-3363 to plan an evening event.
