Plain Gouda Belegen Cheese US Championship Cheese Winner

Plain Gouda Belegen cheese, Holland’s Family Cheese, Thorp, Wisconsin

2017 US Cheese Championship Winner

Made from pasteurized cow milk.

This award-winning Gouda is made from rBGH-free cow milk by Holland’s Family Cheese in central Wisconsin.  It is aged for nine months and is just as sweet, nutty and firm as its Dutch counterpart.

2017 US CHEESE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER  : Penterman was in familiar territory. It’s the third time in the last four contests she’s been among the top three cheese makers, including a win in 2013. She thanked her husband who supported her quest to make gouda some 10 years ago. It was somewhat of a novelty in 2006. She says when she told neighbors she intended to make gouda, they asked what’s that?

This year four gouda made the final 20 cheeses. As a style, only cheddar had more finalists.

Rolf and Marieke Penterman emigrated from the Netherlands to Wisconsin in 2002 to pursue their passion for dairy farming. Their cheeses are smooth, creamy Goudas with a slightly sweet, nutty flavor that becomes more complex as it ages on wooden shelves. Their Holstein cows produce rGBH-free milk that has been creating cheese for international cheese awards since 2006. Additionally, Marieke is a signature cheese made with an authentic Old World Gouda recipe. In fact, the equipment, cultures, herbs and spices are all imported from Holland. This plain gouda cheese will make an excellent addition to a cheese plate!

Pairing suggestions: Orange Marmalade with Lemons, Kickapoo Gold Maple Syrup from western Wisconsin.
